A Contractor Guide to Genset Rental for Malaysian Construction Sites

Many contractors search for genset rental when what the site actually needs is light. This guide separates the two requirements, lists the questions worth asking any supplier, and explains when a genset-powered light tower is the better answer.

A Contractor Guide to Genset Rental for Malaysian Construction Sites

Why This Guide Starts with a Question

What does your site actually need?

Every week we get a message that opens with "I want to rent a genset". When we ask what for, more than half of the answers are the same: the site needs to be lit at night.

That is not a power requirement. It is a lighting requirement, and the right product for it is not a bare generator. πŸ’‘

This guide starts with that distinction because it saves contractors more money than any price negotiation does.

Two Different Needs Sharing One Word

A genset is a supply

A generator set produces electricity. You then distribute that electricity through a board and cabling to whatever needs it β€” power tools, hoists, cabins, welding sets, lamps.

A light tower is a finished result

A mobile light tower is a silent diesel generator carrying an 8 m telescopic lighting mast. It produces light directly. No distribution board, no cable across the site, nothing to assemble.

Said plainly

TerangPro rents light towers only. The generator is part of the light tower and is not hired separately. If your site needs a bare genset for tools or cabins, that is a different supplier β€” and we will tell you on the first message.

If You Need Power

Start from connected load

For an actual generator, sizing comes from connected load in kVA. List everything that will be connected, account for motor starting current, and let a generator supplier do the calculation.

What a bare genset needs that people forget

  • A proper distribution board and protection
  • Correctly sized cable and a safe cable route
  • Earthing to the site's requirements
  • A safe standing position clear of walkways and air intakes
  • A refuelling and maintenance routine

All of that is cost and time that rarely appears in the first price comparison.

If You Need Light

One unit, one set-up operation

A light tower arrives on a trailer, is towed into position, stood up on its outriggers and raised with the winch. No site electricity is needed.

The TerangPro unit is an MCWEL MLT8S β€” 8 m telescopic mast, four 500 W lamps, silent diesel generator on board, at RM 3,500 per unit per month including delivery and set-up.

How many units?

Work from the area that needs lighting at night:

  • Obstructed building sites β€” around 3,000 mΒ² per unit
  • Roads and open linear works β€” around 4,000 mΒ² per unit
  • Yards, car parks and open ground β€” around 3,500 mΒ² per unit

These are planning estimates. The full method is in our coverage guide.

Seven Questions Before You Sign

  1. Is the rate daily, weekly or monthly? Compare the same unit of time.
  2. Is delivery included? If not, how much?
  3. Is set-up on site included? Or is the unit left at the gate?
  4. Who refuels it? Usually the site β€” make sure it is stated.
  5. What happens if it fails at 2 a.m.? Ask for a specific answer, not "we'll sort it out".
  6. What is the mast height? Height decides coverage more than lamp count does.
  7. Can the unit count change mid-hire? Projects change; the contract should be able to follow.

Four Common Mistakes

1. Renting a genset then buying floodlights

Once you add lamps, stands, cable and a board, the cost exceeds a light tower and the result is harder to move.

2. Choosing by wattage instead of mast height

A lamp at 4 m makes a small pool of light. The same lamp at 8 m lights a far bigger area. Height is the real variable.

3. Placing units at the site boundary

Half the output goes over the fence. Central placement with the mast fully up does far more with the same machine.

4. Forgetting the access routes

Sites light the work and leave the walking routes dark. Check the gate, the walkways and the rest area too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a generator set on its own from TerangPro?

No. We rent light towers only. The silent diesel generator is built into the unit and has no separate price.

How much is a light tower per month?

RM 3,500 per unit per month, including delivery and set-up. Fuel is site-side.

Do I need site power?

No. Each unit carries its own silent diesel generator, so it works on unserviced ground.

Can the unit be moved during the project?

Yes. It is trailer-mounted with a winch and outriggers β€” lower the mast, tow, stand it back up.

What is the minimum rental period?

We price per unit per month. Message us with your dates and we will suggest the most sensible arrangement.

The Short Version

Before renting anything, answer one question: does your site need power or light? If power, hire a generator from a generator supplier. If light, a light tower is that same generator with the lamps and mast already fitted.

RM 3,500 per unit per month, delivered and set up. πŸ”¦
